"Greek scholars have produced a vast body of evidence bearing on nuptial practices that has yet to be mined by a professional economist. By standing on their shoulders, the author proposes and tests radically new interpretations of three important status groups in Greek history: the pallake, the hetaira, and the nothos. It is argued that legitimate marriage - that is 'marriage by loan of the bride to the groom' - was not the only form of legal marriage in classical Athens and the ancient Greek world generally. Pallakia, that is, 'marriage by sale of the bride to the groom', also was legally recognized. The pallake-wifeship transaction is a sale into slavery with a restrictive covenant mandating the employment of the sold woman as a wife. In this highly original and challenging new book economist Morris Silver proposes and tests the hypothesis that the likelihood of bride sale rises with increases in the distance between the ancestral residence of the groom and the father's household. The 'bastard' (nothoi) children of pallakai lacked the legal right to inherit from their fathers but were routinely eligible for Athenian citizenship. It is argued that the basic social meaning of hetaira ('companion') is not 'prostitute'/'courtesan' but 'single woman' - that is, a woman legally recognized as being under her own authority (kuria). The defensive adaptation of single women is reflected in Greek myth and social practice by their grouping into 'packs', most famously the Daniads and Amazons"--

Internationalement reconnu pour ses travaux sur la religion et la société grecques antiques, Pierre Brulé ne cesse de déconstruire le « miracle grec » en s'intéressant tout d'abord à ses marges, ses fractures, ses ombres. Les études rassemblées dans cet ouvrage s'inscrivent dans cette perspective en proposant de nouvelles approches, essentiellement dans trois domaines : l'histoire des femmes, l'histoire religieuse et l'histoire du corps. Ces trois domaines bien évidemment se recoupent, et l'analyse de la participation des femmes aux rituels et aux fêtes religieuses grecques, que ce soit à Athènes, à Olympie, à Delphes, ou bien encore dans les Lois de Platon, est complétée par l'étude d'associations, de magistrats, de l'usage du fouet… qui sont autant de manières de mettre en lumière comment les cités intégraient et contrôlaient leurs membres, quels que soient leur genre, leur identité, leur statut, n'hésitant pas à recourir à la violence s'il le fallait. De même, les réflexions proposées sur la médecine, les vêtements, les offrandes sacrificielles et le polythéisme, à partir de la prise en compte de mythes, de représentations, des noms des dieux, permettent de nouveau de modifier le regard porté sur le monde antique, en accordant bien souvent une place toute particulière au féminin. Ce refus des idées convenues, ce souci de donner la parole à ceux que les sources ont généralement laissé dans l'ombre, cette attention portée tout autant aux faits les plus concrets qu'à l'imaginaire, témoignent ainsi du renouvellement actuel de l'histoire de l'Antiquité, dont Pierre Brulé est, Chemin faisant, l'un des acteurs importants.

Il examine dans un premier chapitre les situations de femmes proches des cercles dirigeants et qui furent tantôt bénéficiaires d'actions masculines, tantôt instrumentalisées par des hommes de leur entourage ; le second chapitre se focalise sur les rôles actifs endossés par des femmes, soit officiellement dans un cadre aulique ou sur la scène publique, soit plus discrètement à l'intérieur des demeures privées. This collection attempts to recover the voices of women in antiquity from a variety of perspectives: how they spoke, where they could be heard, and how their speech was adopted in literature and public discourse. Rather than confirming the old model of binary oppositions in which women's speech was viewed as insignificant and subordinate to male discourse, these essays reveal a dynamic and potentially explosive interrelation between women's speech and the realm of literary production, religion, and oratory. The contributors use a variety of methodologies to mine a diverse array of sources, from Homeric epic to fictional letters of the second sophistic period and from actual letters written by women in Hellenistic Egypt to the poetry of Sappho. Throughout, the term "voice" is used in its broadest definition. It includes not only the few remaining genuine women's voices but also the ways in which male authors render women's speech and the social assumptions such representations reflect and reinforce. These essays therefore explore how fictional female voices can serve to negotiate complex social, epistemological, and aesthetic issues.
